Lebenskultur im Steirischen Vulkanland

5 Our cultural wealth This book is a result of the Central Europe pro- ject CULTURAL CAPITAL COUNTS, which intends to valorise the intangib- le cultural heritage for a sustainable development of European regions. Cul- tural Capital Counts is co- financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) through the Central Europe Program- me. It unites 10 partners from 6 European coun- tries in their common attempt to achieve the target of capitalize cul- tural resources for more competitive cities and regions by focussing on their intangible resources like people`s skills, know- ledge and talents. Final goal of the project is the implementation of a strategy for sustainab- le regional development based on intangible re- gional resources, thus to improve economic deve- lopment and quality of life in European regions. This strategy offers a completely new perspec- tive for European regions for a truly endogenous development! A deep bond between creative genius and know- how is generated by the intangible cultural heri- tage which ensures the unique character and dis- tinct identity of any local area and the people who live there. Knowledge and skills are constantly re-created over the gene- rations; they represent a vital and rich heritage for our economy, especially today. The Steirisches Vulkanland is a melting pot of special arts and typical crafts traditions. There are many “cultural professi- ons” forming a fundamen- tal part of our creative system and knowledge society that today guide advanced economies. Every field and every product merges history, region, ability and inven- tiveness that come to express an identity and a life style. They are not objects but cultural pro- cesses which must be va- lorised together with the social act of creation and re-development. We would like to thank all our partners who worked with us to develop the Cultural Capital Counts Project. The implicit value of this project lies in its capacity for networking and cooperation as well as in sharing know how and skills. A lot of hidden treasures were discover- ed! The results of our re- search are now presented in nine brochures, one for each participating region in the national language. Descriptions of all regi- ons‘ intangible cultural heritage are available at our database in English. http://www.culturalcapitalcounts.eu
